Students today just don't get the proper media literacy training that is necessary to keep up in this digital world that we live in today. I know when I was in high school that I took computer classes and yet I still only learned the very minimal in media literacy. I didn't learn how to blog, do magazines, how to use media and implement certain media techniques. Students are spending so much time on the Internet yet do not truly know how to use digital media correctly. Teachers need to really focus on making students more media literate.

This picture shows a collaborative class probably learning what they need to be learning about media literacy, but sadly enough there aren't many classes like this!!

I agree. In my small high school i don't even think there were computer classes! I never even heard of blogging until I reached this class. So I don't think students are getting the proper education with media as they need.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you recognize how important these media skills are and that they are related to traditionally literacy skills that help students learning to read and write print based texts!
ReplyDeleteI came from a small high school too, and while we had one computer class our entire career there we did not learn any media literacy in it. I also feel that it is very important to get students actively involved about what the images and audio they are seeing.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with what you are saying. When I had computer classes in high school we played halo 3 on the computers and practiced golf outside . It is important for teachers to take media literacy seriously since computers are so important in learning today. That they teach there students about these tools that they can use in daily life.
